The Puerto Rican boxer wants to face the best talent the 168-pound division has to offer.
Edgar “The Chosen One” by Berlang he started throwing punches in the air when his entry into Matchroom Boxing was official. Reason? In the near future, the Puerto Rican boxer sees a meeting with the Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
First, you’ll need to shake off the rust with a fight or two since you’ve been inactive since June 2022.. In addition, Alvarez has an engagement with Britain’s John Ryder next May in Mexico.
“We chose Matchroom because they offered us a better future for Edgar’s career. We want big fights and that includes Canelo,” said Edgar Berlanga Sr., who declined to go into the financial details of the deal.
Berlanga began his rental boxing career in 2016 as a free agent. He was then promoted to Top Rank in the last 11 of 20 fights. However, in January of last year, they cordially ended their relationship.
“We thank Top Rank for the work they did with Edgar, as well as ESPN. But we did not agree on how to take his career to another level. We’ve been asking for Ryder since last September, but they’ve been giving us fights that didn’t count, that didn’t get us to the World Championship. These were fights that didn’t matter to usBerlanga Sr. shared.
The fighter is scheduled to have one fight next May and then one more before turning his gun on Alvarez.
“The list we have is to fight now against the opponent they put us, then do one more and then Canelo. We want to fight with the best. Edgar has already had three 10-round fights and is ready to go 12. At this level, we understand that you don’t have to have a world championship to face Canelo.. Edgar is young and has won his first 16 fights by knockout in the first round. Whatever they say, it’s difficult to do it,” he said.
Actually, he did not rule out the possibility of competing with Jaime Munguia, who belongs to Golden Boy Promotions.
“We met with Oscar de la Hoya, and Mungwia in the future after Canelo. It is unknown if David Benavidez will hold 168 pounds or move up to 175. Edgar is comfortable at 168 so we stay“, he claimed.
Berlanga Sr. said they will travel to Tampa, Fla., on Saturday to begin training camp. He also noted that they will spend time in Puerto Rico.
“Edgar is scheduled to fight in the last week of May. We will be quartered between Tampa and Puerto Rico. We already have an almost ready house where the boys will train,” he concluded.
